Welcome to our residency blog.
Lindsay is always living her best life. Whether she’s exploring the ocean’s depths scuba diving, renovating her home (during residency) or exploring the natural world around Oregon – Lindsay crafts a vision and makes it happen. She serves as an assistant medical director for a local fire and EMS agency, runs our neer-peer advising group for medical students and was the first resident to successfully coordinate customized jackets for our group 🙌🏼 (seriously - it’s an unreal amount of work to do).
The best part about Lindsay though is her humble approach to everything she does. She knows what she wants and makes it happen – all while helping to bring others along with her. She a tremendous asset for our residency and we can’t say how grateful we are she’s a part of our team. She’s our current RIP City Resident!
We all know you for your love of diving, where did that come from? What's the wildest encounter with the deep sea you've had while diving?
My dad was stationed in Guam during the Vietnam War and he learned to dive there. When I turned 12, he got me certified and I have been hooked ever since! It was always something that we did together. He was never a big talker, so it was kind of a great sport for us and took us traveling all over the world. I also met my husband diving, as we're both diving instructors and used to work on the same boat together.
As anyone who has ever heard a ridiculous story from a trauma patient will know, humans are definitely the wildest encounters, even underwater. In terms of critters, I got to dive with a whale shark on my first day on the job as a divemaster way back in 2011.
Who's Rowdy, what's he like?
Rowdy is my dog. He's a chill dude. I do my best to talk about him all of the time.
Who's Lola, what's she like?
Lola is our new puppy! She's a crazy and wants to spend 10,000% of her time right next to Rowdy.
What's the best purchase of under $100 you've made in the past 12 months?
The Oregon/PNW Park Passes. We love hiking, walking, snowshoeing and so do Rowdy and (now) Lola. We're always excited to get outside.
Pretend you have a day off; go to the mountain or the beach?
If it's the whole family, the beach is our place. If it's just me and Rowdy, we hit the mountains.
If you could design a billboard in downtown Portland, what would it say?
I once saw an amazing billboard in South Florida that depicted a volcanic eruption and stated in very bold letters "syphilis explosion." I'm not sure exactly what explosion is happening in Portland, but maybe the "gonorrhea tsunami."
What's one thing you make sure to have with you on every shift in the ED?
My wits. Patience. A snack. A pen? There are so many good options. I specifically like my stethoscope because it has a shark that lights up which is good for a) pupillary light reflex and b) entertainment for both children and adults alike. I get a lot of funny commentary about it and it has brought my stethoscope back to me on multiple occasions.
